Python Built-in Functions List

Python language interpreter has various built-in functions for different types of tasks and manipulation. Following is a complete list of Python 3.x built-in functions. Every Python function is well defined in this reference with effective and easy to understand examples and code snippets. Python built-in functions is a part of Python Standard Library.

All Python built-in functions are listed below in alphabetical order.

Short introduction of Python built-in functions:

Please click on any function name for more detail, examples and code snippets.

Function NameFunction Description
abs( n )Returns absolute or positive value of a Python number or a numeric expression like integer, float or complex. If argument n is a complex number then its magnitude is returned.
all( iterable )Returns True only if all elements of argument iterable are true. all() function can be consider as series of logical or and and operators. This should be noted that if argument iterable is empty then all() function returns True.
any( iterable )Returns a true if elements of iterable are true and return false if iterable is empty.
ascii()Returns a string containing a printable representation of an object. The non-ASCII character will be escaped in string by using \x, \u or \U.
bin()Returns a binary string of an integer or an int object.
bool()Returns a Boolean value from a function, the Boolean value could be true or false.
bytearray()Returns a byte array object which is a mutable sequence of integers(that can be change) in the range of 0 <=x < 256 for the given inputs.
bytes()Returns a new immutable “bytes” object initialized with the given size and data.
callable()Returns true if the object passed appears callable. If not, it returns false.
chr()Returns a character (a string) from an integer (represents unicode code point of the character).
classmethod()Returns a class method for given function.
compile()Returns a Python code object for the given inputs (string, a byte string, or an AST object).
complex()Returns a complex number.
delattr()Removes attributes from the object.
